There have been many excellent biographies of Catherine the Great.

My favourites are…

John T. Alexander, “Catherine The Great; Life and Legend.” Authoritative and yet popular, it gives a vivid portrait of Catherine as a mother, lover and most of all a ruler.

Virginia Rounding, “Catherine the Great; Love, Sex, and Power.” A vivid, well-rounded portrait of Catherine in public and private.

Simon Dixon, “Catherine the Great.” Remarkable for its fascinating depiction of Russian 18th century architecture and interiors, as well as Catherine’s character.

Robert K. Massie, “Catherine the Great; Portrait of a Woman.” A very comprehensive and detailed portrait of Catherine the woman.
